Leadfoot Rivet est Alain Rivet, chanteur de blues-rock-soul depuis les années 60. One night on the road est l’enregistrement d’un concert, où les gens se taisent pour regarder de la musique. Entre temps, il a fondé un label (Dixiefrog), organisé des concerts et bu l’apéro avec tous les grands noms du blues et de la soul.

Leadfoot Rivet est à l’univers ce que le chocolat est à la déprime : un excellent remède, une sage décision, une tentation, une explosion de saveurs, une myriade de couleurs. D’une voix de velours légèrement usée par ce qu’il se doit de substances toxiques, d’un piano et de cordes envoutantes, Leadfoot Rivet emporte son public sur les rives des fleuves américains, dans les canyons déserts, sur les mers en furie, dans les escapades enneigées, sous des orages endiablés, au cœur de disputes conjugales et de crises de jalousie pour le blanc du poulet.
Je l’imaginais en santiags et blouson à franges, j’avais oublié le chapeau et la barbe fleurie. Je repérai ses rimes dans un américain parfaitement maîtrisé, le répertoire français m’avait échappé. J’entendais la profondeur du blues de son âme, je n’avais pas repéré la maturité inhérente à l’expérience d’une vie bien remplie et rondement.
Mais bien sûr qu’il parle d’amour, parce que même chanter la peine c’est chanter l’amour. Leadfoot Rivet incarne passionnément l’humanité, avec ce qu’elle a de rêves et d’espoir pour s’enrichir et apprendre de ses erreurs. One night on the road est une bande-annonce parfaite pour chaque petit moment et grands évènements où vous sentez votre cœur affleurer là, tout près. Emouvant et intense.

BLUES AGAIN
Le blues dans tous ses étatsOn dirait le Sud… et c’est bien de cela qu’il s’agit. Ça ressemble à la Louisiane, mais au Texas aussi, et à la Georgie, au Tennessee, et encore à l’Alabama. Alain Rivet déploie un sonorama de southern americana, country, soul, blues, gospel, jazz, avec le concours de quelques pointures. Les guitares s’éveillent sous les doigts de Jean Paul Avellaneda (qui s’est aussi investi dans la production), Stan Noubard Pacha et Anson Funderburgh, Slim Batteux est aux claviers, la basse est tenue par Thomas Weirich et les fûts résonnent sous les coups de Stéphane Avellaneda, quant à l’harmonica, c’est Leadfoot qui souffle dedans. Le groove est puissant, la voix est grave et bien posée. Rivet signe 11 titres et fait 4 reprises. Il connaît la musique ou plutôt ces musiques, et la barre est assez haute. Mais c’est lui qui l’a placée et le résultat est là, on pense à Johnny Cash ou Salomon Burke. Au fil de l’écoute qui nous entraîne dans un étonnant voyage musical, les genres sont variés mais tout s’enchaîne sans rupture de ton d’une plage à l’autre. Leadfoot Rivet fait preuve d’une parfaite maîtrise et d’une réelle décontraction. Avec une puissance contenue et sans jamais forcer le trait il est au top du début à la fin, il navigue d’un style à l’autre avec aisance et enthousiasme. C’est une très belle réussite et on se laisse emporter. Pour faire bonne mesure, ces Southern Echoes ont été enregistrés aux studios EVS à Oraison… en plein Sud bien sûr.

Il est sans doute le plus américain des bluesmen français, à moins que ce ne soit le contraire, et il a tellement accompagné ou été accompagné par les meilleurs que l’on finit par ne plus savoir s’il est un grand sideman ou au contraire un grand entertainer, à moins que ce ne soit les deux … Ce que l’on sait par contre, c’est que non content d’être un grand artiste, Leadfoot Rivet est un superbe songwriter qui laisse son âme trainer depuis belle lurette sur les routes poussiéreuses du Sud des Etats Unis et qu’il en rapporte à chaque fois des trésors de blues et de folk blues, et ce n’est pas ce nouvel effort du chanteur et guitariste qui nous démentira puisque l’on y trouve une collection de chansons qui forme au bout du chemin une sorte de roadtrip à la Kerouac … Soutenu par une équipe de fines gâchettes où l’on remarque forcément Anson Funderburgh, Stan Noubard-Pacha et Jean Paul Avellaneda aux guitares, Slim Batteux aux claviers ou encore Stéphane Avellaneda à la batterie, Leadfoot Rivet met comme toujours le pied sur l’accélérateur et nous propose une quinzaine de morceaux dont pas moins de onze compositions, des titres sur lesquels planent les ombres de Stax ou encore de Muscle Shoals avec à la clef des chansons bien remuantes et bien énergiques et juste en face de superbes blues ballads à vous dresser le plus court des poils … De « The Bullfrog » à « Ghost Train », de « Highly Educated Fool » à « Damned Tourists ! » ou de « Miss Paranoia » à « The Game Of Love », c’est un mélange subtil où la voix chaude et puissante se marie à merveille à des instrumentations du plus bel effet que l’on croise, le résultat d’ensemble dépassant de la tête et des épaules ce que l’on peut attendre d’un simple album de blues pour nous offrir un véritable road book qui passe des clubs miteux aux chapelles et des juke joints aux concert halls en moins de temps qu’il n’en faut pour le dire. A la fois chanteur de blues, crooner et preacher, Leadfoot Rivet nous prouve une fois encore toute l’étendue de son talent et ce n’est pas pour nous déplaire, loin de là ! Un bon album de musiques américaines Made in France qui n’a rien à envier à ce qui se fait là-bas …

It’s not easy to explain how this french bard, poet & singer songwriter has converted Provence into the Deep South of the USA !
He has already proved on his previous album that he is a superb bluesman well soaked into american music. He is so deeply imerged into it he can approach any style chameleon like !!
Of the fifteen tracks included most of the songs are penned by Leadfoot and the deep voiced singer can appeal to everyone, sometimes even sounding like a crooner. And he sings harmonies too ! The melodies are efficient and really stick to your ear
The great Anson Funderburgh lends his magic guitar touch to the album as well as guitarists Stan Noubard-Pacha and JP Avellaneda, the latest acting as the producer too.

Leadfoot Rivet may be French, but his soul belongs somewhere among the dusty backroads of Mississippi. For years he has played with and organised tours for visiting American blues musicians but he has absorbed many other influences and this is the result – his own mongrel music,a synthesis of blues, folk, soul and country, even fado, sòn, milonga and oriental music. Welcome To My Mongrel Music World
Leadfoot Rivet (I suspect pronounced RI-VAY), is French blues man Alain (Al) Rivet, and he comes with some impeccable credentials, having played with a slew of blues men and women visiting la belle France. He is a modest but earthy harmonica player who can deliver a guitar lick when needed but he does have a super voice and can write lyrics that will stand up to competition from the very best.
The seventeen track on the CD range from How I Love Them God Old Blues (the closer) an outstanding song which deserves to be covered by someone BIG, to Fried Okra, a paean to that staple of the southern diet. On the way we get personal stories like “Friend, Lover, Wife” and the delightful “Apples Dipped In Candy.”.
The Worst Guitar Player In Town is, as are so many of Mr Rivet’s songs done with a touch of Country and a dash of humour. This song in particular, would have been great for Johnny Cash, with a nice ironic theme of every one is better than me.
The musicians in the band do a great job too, but aside from a list of names on the jacket you cannot tell who does what, including, annoyingly a reference to New Orleans slide guitar ace John Mooney in the credits, but its difficult to tell which bits (bit?) Mooney laid down.
Al sings in perfect English without a trace of a French accent, but with a southern twang. I wish the same production values could have been applied to the liner notes, which could have benefited from editing by a person with English as a first language (the author is Brazilian).
All in all, an effort to be applauded.

Mongrel music ? This is what Alain Rivet, who once was nicknamed "Leadfoot" by Larry Garner, calls his personal kind of blues. He plays the blues with a taste of Fado from Portugal, Milonga from Argentina, Són from Cuba as well as French Chanson and Asian sounds. Make no mistake we are not talking world music here, but 17 songs recorded in an acoustic form that would fit also with Johnny Cash or John Prine.
Rivet's vocal is half spoken at times and plainly sung too, and, what is even more curious, he claims to be "the worst guitar player in town" title of one of the songs...this is of course not true at all! Not only Rivet is a skilled songwriter, his lyrics make him a poet as well.
His song "Friend lover wife" is definitely one of the truest and least cheesy love song ever written. "Split personality" & "I feel like I 'm sinking" also show that Rivet is not afraid of being honest with himself, whereas "A godsend" clearly reveals his attitude against any kind of religious fanaticism.
The fact that not all the songs are as outstanding as the ones mentioned above is not really a problem. Looking at the album's running time, one can say that at least three quarters are more than worth listening to. Also, this doesn't take away from the band's constantly good and very supportive work (with Fred Chapellier who happens to be a master on guitar and other string instruments!).
All in all this cd is done real well and highly recommended !!!
